Matt Gerbe liked Michigan’s Pitch and next year he will be pitching for the Wolverines.
A senior at Eisenhower, Gerbe verbally committed to play at Michigan next season. He said he will sign the National Letter of Intent in November.
“It feels good,” said the 6 foot 4, 185-pound Gerbe. “The coaching staff is phenomenal and the players are great to be around. And U-M is a prestigious university.”
Though he is not a hard thrower, Gebe can throw three pitches – a fastball, curveball and changeup – for strikes and he has the potential to get better said Joe Fletcher, Gerbe’s private pitching coach.
“The biggest thing is he throws so effortlessly,” Fletcher said. “It’s almost like he has an extra joint in his arm he throws so fluidly.”
Gerbe credits his older brother, Jeff, a pitcher at Michigan State and Fletcher for helping him improve as a pitcher.
“(Jeff) taught me a lot of mechanical things that he learned,” Gerbe said.
In addition, Jeff also helped Matt connect with Fletcher, a former pitching coach at MSU.
Matt has worked with Fletcher for more than a year, spending much of this summer making the 2 ½ hour trip to Charlotte to train.
“He taught me to almost be my own pitching coach,” Matt Gerbe said. “I have to get a grip on my mechanics…You just pinpoint what went wrong because pitching is all about making adjustments, and he taught me well.”
Fletcher has high praise for his pupil. “He’s very young, very loose, and he has a lot of potential,” Fletcher said. “He’s big, he’s smooth, and he’s loose. He’s the whole package.”
Off the field, Gerbe is a good student, maintaining a 3.25 grade point average and scoring a 25 on the ACT.
Gerbe, who was named to the coaches’ Division 1 All-Macomb County team last season, helped Eisenhower win 22 games in the spring.
“This year at Eisenhower we should have a really solid team and get as far as we can in the playoffs,” he said. “We’re definitely going to be a team to compete this year.” |
